Weighing in on Dental Implants Before Tooth Extraction

6th October 2015

People who have experienced toothache probably had that itch to extract the tooth just so they can get over and done with the pain. This decision, however, seems fitting as an immediate solution only, but illogical in the long run. Dental implants, on the other hand, may be a more suitable remedy to this problem.

The time to consider getting an implant should be no later than extracting the tooth. As soon as dentists remove the tooth, the bone where it sits will begin to shrink and nothing can stop this natural process from occurring. People would not notice this because it transpires under the gums. It depends on the person, but serious bone loss usually happens a couple months after the extraction.

Right Time to Get Implants

It is not always the case, but dentists recommend getting dental implants on the same day of the tooth extraction. This prevents serious bone loss as much as possible. Leaving a gap between the teeth untreated for a long time may lead to a number of oral problems. The general rule is to never leave any space for a missing tooth.

Once the dentist extracts a tooth, no force from chewing would stimulate the bone that once surrounded it. As no daily stimulation occurs, the bone becomes ‘at rest’ and would naturally start to shrink. This shrinking would only stop once an implant is already in place.

Other dental treatment options would not be as effective, though. Bridges cannot prevent bone loss, while dentures may only accelerate its shrinking.

Benefits of Dental Implants

In some way, dental implants can also save people money. By preventing bone loss, they do not have to undergo cosmetic treatments, such as a bone or gum graft. Moreover, they can avoid as much pain.

On top of it all, dental implants provide a number of advantages. They function just as well as natural teeth, making it feel like no extraction occurred. In addition, implants enhance the natural appearance, do not require dental procedures on neighbouring teeth and are highly reliable.

Tooth extraction remains an essential treatment, although dental implants prove to have a lot more upsides. Here at Moonlight Dental Surgery, we offer advanced, revolutionised restorative dentistry.
