Blueberries can fight gum disease: A Guide from a Dentist in Slough

20th October 2015

Dental professionals spend their entire careers helping patients battle plaque and gum disease. The industry’s dedication to this end has helped create useful tools that changed oral health forever. The dangers to teeth and gums are still present, however, and the dentists need to be more creative with their solutions if we want to help our patients.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of imaginative solutions when it comes to oral health, and the latest breakthrough may become the most popular one yet. A study recently published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that the anti-bacterial properties of blueberry extracts could be the answer everyone is looking for.

Blueberry Power

There is already documented evidence for the effectiveness of blueberry extract – specifically the polyphenols – against foodborne pathogens. Researchers conducted several tests to see if the compounds could be just as effective in fighting one of the main species of bacteria associated with periodontitis – Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Scientists chose to use the extract of the wild low bush blueberry species vaccinium angustifolium for their experiments. During the tests, researchers found that the blueberry extract successfully inhibited the growth of the bacteria, hindering its ability to form biofilms on the tooth’s surface.

Blueberry Cleaning

The most common method of treating gum disease involves the dentist having to physically scrape off the tartar and use antibiotics to kill the lingering bacteria. If dental professionals can design a device that can slowly apply the polyphenol-rich extract into the gum line after deep cleaning, they can cut off periodontitis before it fully develops.

This is only one among the many possible solutions that researchers have come up with in recent years to respond to the threat of gum disease. The constant studying and effort of dental professionals allows patients the opportunity to get multiple options when it comes to their dental care, which is never a bad thing in medicine.
