If you are considering any sort of orthodontic treatment then you probably have lots of questions you’d like to ask. While some are best answered by Dr Jaswinder Gill, during your free consultation at the Moonlight Dental Surgery, others are more common and apply to many people. We have listed a few of the most frequently asked questions below.
Quite a few people still think orthodontics is for children and teenagers, but it is becoming far more common to see adults wearing braces. In fact treatment is suitable for both children and adults, provided the teeth are healthy and strong. It is never too late to straighten your teeth, and to enjoy the benefits of a healthier smile.
The most common issues are often very straightforward. Perhaps your teeth don’t quite bite together correctly, or maybe they are overcrowded or poorly aligned. It is not unusual for someone to have one or two teeth that just stick out too far, marring an otherwise nice smile. Although some people might need substantial orthodontic treatment to correct problems, many others will not, and can benefit from the very latest braces technology that can quickly correct minor issues.
Cosmetic braces are great for correcting problems affecting front teeth, and which might be quite minor but are highly visible. If you found out about braces in the past, but were put off by the price, it might be worth inquiring about this system as it is more affordable than other braces, and of course treatment will be over almost before you know it.
You do need to spend a bit of extra time cleaning around the brackets, and you will need to avoid eating particularly hard or sticky foods during treatment as these could dislodge the brackets or break the wires. However, there are lots of tools to help you clean around braces, and we will give you tons of information on how to clean your mouth during this time. There is likely to be some degree of discomfort, but this can vary from person to person depending on how much your teeth need to move. It should be easy to control with over-the-counter painkillers, and is most likely to be temporary soon after the braces have been adjusted. This is true for all types of braces, as after all you are expecting your teeth and the tooth roots to move position.
Once the braces are removed, you will need to wear a retainer for a while to prevent the teeth from trying to move back to their original positions. Just about everyone who has had orthodontic treatment will need to wear a retainer, and it is important to do so as otherwise all that effort could be for nothing. Retainers are easy to wear, and are very unobtrusive. They can be removable or bonded onto the back surfaces of your teeth.
