A dental crown is the part of a tooth that you can see and which sits above the gum-line. When it becomes damaged, an artificial crown can cover it to prevent further damage and restore your smile.

When might you need a crown?

Having a weak, damaged or decayed tooth are all reasons to warrant having a crown. They can also be used to protect against long-term wear and tear as a result of tooth-grinding and to tackle tooth decay. If you are having treatment such as dental implants, crowns can be used to restore aesthetics and provide a chewing function.

What can I expect from treatment for a crown?

We will examine the tooth in question to establish the degree of damage or wear and see if a filling will suffice in the first instance, rather than a crown. If a crown is the best option, we will take digital scans of the tooth being crowned and of the adjacent teeth, which will inform the design of your crown when it is created at the off-site dental lab. Your dentist here at Moonlight Dental Surgery will also consider your tooth shade and colour, so your crown can be beautifully crafted in the image of your smile.

What are the benefits of getting a crown?

  • Crowns strengthen your tooth and look and feel like natural teeth.
  • Crowns can be cared for in the same way as your other teeth and, if cared for properly, they can last many years.
