Who qualifies for free treatment from an NHS dentist?

15th December 2015

At Moonlight Dental Surgery in Slough we believe that anyone who needs an NHS dentist should be able to find one easily. Many people qualify for free treatment on the NHS. Here, we look at who is eligible for free treatment.

If you are still unsure whether you qualify, please do get in touch with a member of the reception team at our Slough dental practice. We are always happy to help.

Those exempt from paying charges to see an NHS dentist

1) Those under the age of 18 (19 if in full-time education)

At Moonlight Dental Surgery in Slough we know the importance of good oral healthcare for children and young people. Regular appointments with a dentist from a young age can help prevent common problems such as tooth decay and gum disease from arising, and can help to establish good dental health for life. NHS dental treatment is free for those up to the age of 18, and for those aged 19 who are full-time students.

2) Pregnant and nursing mothers

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but few people know that pregnant women have an increased chance of developing some dental health problems, including gingivitis, and tooth erosion if you experience severe morning sickness. You qualify for free treatment from an NHS dentist if you are pregnant or if you have a baby under the age of 1.

3) Patients in receipt of certain benefits

If you are currently unemployed and in receipt of benefits, you may qualify for free treatment from an NHS dentist. Relevant benefits include:

  • Income support
  • Jobseekers’ Allowance
  • NHS tax credit exemption
  • Pension Credit Guarantee
  • You hold an NHS HC2 exemption certificate

If you do not fall into any of these categories but are on a low income or are in receipt of other benefits, you may still be able to claim exemption from paying charges for an NHS dentist by filling in an HC1 form.
