Why preventative treatment from your dentist is the best way to protect your oral health

7th June 2016

Prevention is better than cure; any dentist will tell you this is particularly pertinent when it comes to oral health. Moonlight Dental Surgery in Slough offers a full range of preventative dental treatments, and welcomes new patients both for private and NHS dental treatment.

We are currently in the middle of National Smile Month 2016 (16th May-16th June), which is organised by the Oral Health Foundation to serve as a reminder to people of the importance of good oral health.

A survey undertaken as part of National Smile Month shows that people in the UK are generally good about visiting the dentist – 61% of adults in England, 60% in Northern Ireland and 69% in both Scotland and Wales regularly visit the dentist, with half of those surveyed saying they go for a dental check-up every six months.

Compare this with figures from 1978, when just 44% of adults in England and 39% of those in Wales said they regularly visited the dentist, and it’s clear to see things are going in the right direction. However, there is still work to be done – 27% of adults admitted to only visiting a dental practice when a problem occurred.

Preventative dentistry aims to stop problems arising in the first place. At our Slough practice we recommend, in general, that you should come in for a check-up every six months, although some patients may need to visit more frequently. You should always follow your dentist’s advice.

The problem with conditions such as tooth decay is that, often, they show few if any physical symptoms in the early stages. At our Slough practice we use higher magnification, powerful lighting, and x-rays to aid in early decay detection. Smaller cavities are much easier (and less expensive) to treat.

Gum disease also often has few early warning symptoms. Regular hygiene appointments at our Slough clinic help to prevent and/or detect gum disease before it becomes serious. Your dentist will also perform an oral cancer screening as standard. As with any form of cancer, early diagnosis and treatment is vital in maximising your chances of making a full recovery.
